Next weekend Alcalá de Henares will be celebrating its Carnival 2014 which will begin on Saturday, March 1, with the recovery of the Concursos de Comparsas (Troupes Contest) from 6:00 pm, and will begin with a parade in the Plaza de los Santos Niños. Later there will be a performance of “The Octopus” (8:00 pm) and the Great Masquerade Ball Contest (9:00 pm).

Registration for all contests are open and can be formalized until the celebration day.

Burial of the Sardine

The evening of March 5 is reserved for the traditional burial of the sardine. From 7:00 pm will be held in the Plaza de Cervantes a troupe concentration, as well as all participants in the Carnival, which will begin the journey to the Huerta del Obispo accompanied by Taller de Danza Alcalá. In the Huerta itself will proceed to the burial of the sardine and a fireworks show that will close the Carnival.

Burial of the Sardine
The ‘Burial of the Sardine’ (Entierro de la sardina) is a Spanish ceremony celebrating the end of carnival and other festivities. The “Burials” generally consist of a carnival parade that parodies a funeral procession and culminates with the burning of a symbolic figure, usually a representation of a sardine. The “Burial of the Sardine” during carnival is celebrated on Ash Wednesday and is a symbolical burial of the past to allow society to be reborn, transformed and with new vigour.
