Get to know the details of the Alcalá de Henares Carnival 2014 programming. Carnival is the most massive event in Alcalá during the month of March.

The Councillor of Feasts of the City of Alcalá de Henares, Virginia Sanz, presented the program for Carnival 2014 and has mainly highlighted the increase of a day of activity  and “the participation of entities and associations, because  after the success of the Three King-s Parade, we will count on the collaboration of Club Patín Alcalá and Taller de Danza at the Burial of the Sardine, besides the usual support of Peñas Festivas de la Ciudad“.

Burial of the Sardine
The ‘Burial of the Sardine’ (Entierro de la sardina) is a Spanish ceremony celebrating the end of carnival and other festivities. The “Burials” generally consist of a carnival parade that parodies a funeral procession and culminates with the burning of a symbolic figure, usually a representation of a sardine. The “Burial of the Sardine” during carnival is celebrated on Ash Wednesday and is a symbolical burial of the past to allow society to be reborn, transformed and with new vigour.

Also new in Carnival 2014 will be the recovery of the Concursos de Comparsas (Troupes Contest) and Dance Masks, and the great performance of “The Octopus”. The amount of cash prices has been increased from 1150 to 3000 euros to encourage citizen participation. In addition, following the success of last year’s Carnival, the Department of Fests bet again on the performance of the Chirigota gaditana, “Los Primeros en Mojarse”.

Chirigota
In Chirigotas we usually find about a dozen people. Their repertoire emphasizes especially couplets. Stand satirical aspects, metaphors related to life and society, and double meanings and interpretations in their lyrics.
